Bridge Project pack: A Fun and Educational Way to Introduce Bridge Construction

Stoddard Pack Bridge is a pedestrian and pack animal crossing over the Salmon River, approximately 0.5 miles downstream of the confluence with the Middle Fork of the Salmon River. The bridge is an important access point into the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness Area. The original 348-foot wooden suspension bridge was replaced in 2014 utilizing the original suspension cables. The replacement bridge collapsed in March 2017 due to rockfall damaging the 35-foot tall south side suspension tower. A new asymmetric suspension bridge is proposed to replace the damaged bridge and will have the same deck widths of the previous bridge.

This project will reconstruct the wooden pack bridge that was destroyed by a rockfall event in March of 2017. The new, proposed asymmetric suspension bridge will be constructed near the site of the previous bridge, but the south tower will move west to avoid higher-risk rockfall potential. The existing north tower will be reconstructed at the same location.


The Package 3 bridge sites are located in Fairfield (S-101), Florence (S-57), and Newberry (SC Route 34) Counties. Parrish & Partners provided project management, roadway design, structure design, bridge hydraulic analysis, drainage design, erosion and sediment control design, utility coordination, and environmental permitting. As a whole, the team also provided additional surveying, geotechnical investigation/design, and right of way acquisition services. Each site was on a fast-track design and construction schedule.


Further evaluation in 2019 showed additional cracking and deterioration of support piers and abutments. Blackrock Ranger District completed an environmental analysis in 2017 and the Regional Forester has approved a motorized and mechanized Wilderness Exception for portions of the project, including use of a Type 1 helicopter, the largest type of helicopter the Forest Service typically uses for firefighting, and other motorized and mechanized tools. These are necessary for installing the large bridge components and for removing large existing components such as steel girders. All elements of the project that can be accomplished with primitive tools and pack stock will be completed in this manner.


Spring is a popular time to visit Yellowstone Meadows, Atlantic Creek and Bridger Lake to fish the Yellowstone cutthroat trout spawn. Unfortunately, spawning season will coincide with the months the bridge will be unusable. Due to spring flooding of the Yellowstone River, accessing traditionally used camping sites around Bridger Lake and crossing the river could be difficult or unsafe without the bridge.


The map provided with this press release is designed to emphasize the bridge construction area closure, other areas with special camping and grazing considerations, and to highlight alternate fishing opportunities in locations outside the project area. Reminders on stay limits, person and stock number limits, food storage and certified weed seed free stock feed requirements are also listed.


Reaching this milestone allows BPP to proceed with the design and construction of the first six bridges of the Program, with construction set to begin in September 2023 and to be completed between September 2027 to June 2028. The design and construction of the work will be undertaken by a joint venture consisting of S&B USA Construction and FCC Construction.


The Program includes a total of nine bridges, six to be completed in this first package and an additional three in a second package. Macquarie Capital and S&B USA Concessions will work collaboratively with PennDOT to develop the second package of the Program under a pre-development agreement, similar to the process undergone by the parties for the first package.


BPP is represented by local firms throughout the consortium, including S&B USA Concessions, S&B USA Construction and its subsidiary, Joseph B. Fay, Wagman, H&K Group, Kokosing, Michael Baker International, Alfred Benesch and Borton-Lawson, all of which are located or headquartered in the state of Pennsylvania and have over a 20-year track record of successful project delivery with PennDOT working in multiple PennDOT districts.


Washington state leaders in the House are proposing the largest increase in gas taxes in state history as part of a $26 billion transportation package. The 16-year package includes an automatic inflation adjustment, raising the gas tax to nearly $1 per gallon. The proposal includes carbon taxes and other tax increases including vehicle weight fees and car tab fees.


Rep. Vicki Kraft (Republican, 17th District) expressed strong opposition in her response to the proposed transportation package and its tax increases. Any tax on the people, especially at a time like this where so many have experienced serious financial challenges over the past year, proves the Democrat majority in Olympia is completely out of touch with the realities Washingtonians are facing now. This tax will raise the price of gas to 85.4 cents per gallon and if carbon fees are added will cost $1 per gallon.


Of interest to Southwest Washington citizens is the proposed expenditure of $1 billion for the Interstate Bridge Replacement Project (IBRP). This was the only transportation project specifically mentioned in the press briefing distributed this week. Furthermore, there are no details on what a replacement bridge will look like, including the cost.


Overall, of the $25.8 billion in spending, transit appears to be the biggest beneficiary. $6.22 billion or 23 percent of the package appears to be spending on mass transit, bikes and pedestrian, state ferries, and rail. Fish culverts get 13.5 percent of the funding.


In 2015, the legislature passed a 16-year, $16 billion transportation package. At the time it was the largest in state history. All the funds raised in that package have not yet been expended. The current proposed package is more than 60 percent larger.


Built in 1905, the East Avenue Railroad Bridge is over 100-years-old and needs to be replaced. The existing bridge is removed in two stages to take advantage of planned track outages and minimize disruptions to rail service. Horizontal clearance under the bridge widens to approximately 58-feet while vertical clearance increases from 12-feet 2-inches to 14-feet 3-inches.


The Program is working closely with the City of Norwalk on the East Avenue roadway on a project that widens approximately 1,600 feet of East Avenue with drainage improvements and new, wider sidewalks on both sides of the road. East Avenue will be lowered allowing for increased vertical clearance and new travel lanes will be added, increasing capacity to four 10 foot lanes under the bridge.


This project also includes improvements to East Norwalk Station. The station receives increased commuter parking including handicap parking on both sides of the tracks. The station platforms are extended to accommodate six train cars in both directions.

The Pennsylvania Rapid Bridge Replacement Project will replace 558 structurally deficient bridges across the commonwealth under a design-build-finance-maintain (DBFM) public-private partnership (P3) arrangement between PennDOT and Plenary Keystone Partners. The concessionaire will also be responsible for demolishing the existing bridges, maintaining traffic during construction, and then maintaining the bridges for 25 years following construction. PennDOT will retain ownership of the bridges throughout the concession period. Most of the bridges included in the program range from 40 to 75 feet in length and are located in rural regions on the state highway system. The bridges are clustered in two groups, one in northeastern Pennsylvania and the second in the southwest. The project will be completed in two phases with the first involving the replacement of 87 Early Completion Bridges (ECBs), and the second including the 471 Remaining Eligible Bridges (REBs). All work is anticipated to be complete by December 2017.


The Notice to Proceed was issued on January 31, 2015. The construction of the ECBs began in June 2015, and the bridges will be completed in batches. Substantial completion of the project is expected on December 31, 2017.

The bridge is due to be installed near Portsmouth in coming months and will span 16 metres (53 feet) over the Wallington River in Waterlooville, Hampshire. Made up of 17 units (1m wide) of pre-cast concrete, each weighing 16 tons, the bridge will take less than a day to install using a 200-300 ton crane in association with a lifting beam also designed and built in Northern Ireland.


We would like to use the Desktop Bridge (similar to what is specified here: -bridge-the-migrate-phase-invoking-a-win32-process-from-a-uwp-app/) to add a small .NET 4.6.1 WPF side-kick app to the main UWP (x86, x64) versions.
